2015 in 12 Photos

We did it! We made it through the fall months that (for me, anyway) are the most stressful time of year. Now all that's left to do is sit back and watch the ball drop, and take a look at the year that came before.

Let's hit it.

Holy cow, January dumped 34" of snow on us. Our kids played outside twice a day from January until March, and we didn't lose a single one of them all winter. I'd say that makes us pretty good parents.

Since it was cold and tundra-like outside all winter, it was constantly a mess in our house. Then there was that rotten February break from school when all the kids who don't ski just wreak havoc at home for a week straight. And oh yeah, we tried to combat the water leaking through our roof with ladies' pantyhose and my post Why I Make My Kids Go to Church went viral with over 85,000 pageviews in two weeks.

As you can imagine, all that snow melting in March caused some problems. You'd think this was a pond or small lake of some kind, but no, it's our driveway. The blog moved to its own domain name and I published my first piece on the Huffington Post.

In April my preschooler discovered how to "take pictures for her blog," so from this point forward 60% of the memory on my camera was occupied by blurry pictures of the dresser and weird upside-down selfies. We also replaced a car stereo and totally failed at Easter egg hunting in a timely fashion.

Phillip and I managed to get away for 6 days in New York City in May (that's 5th Ave in the background.) I was a little shell-shocked when we got home and saw with fresh eyes how nuts our daily life really was. In other ridiculousness, our toddler camped out in our bathroom for most of the month, and I got this semi-flattering email suggesting I'm some sort of style expert. (If you're new here, trust me, I'm the opposite kind of blogger.)

In June my toddler showed us that sometimes you're so tired that you Just. Can't. Even. My kids FINALLY got out of school and we spent the summer drawing with sidewalk chalk on the driveway, going to the beach, taking a fake trip around the world, and not doing the summer reading program at the library.

July was a beautiful month for hiking, running 5Ks (for Phillip, not me, silly), and more going to the beach. A friend took our family out on his boat and I accompanied Phillip to a fancy-pants awards dinner at work that only had one bug in the food.

August was the month when the oldest two kids jetted off to visit their grandparents, we took the littles to a kids' amusement park, camped with friends by the ocean, and went sightseeing in Washington, D.C. for cheap. Lest this sound too glamorous and perfect to be true, I'll mention that there was some amount of projectile vomiting as well.

For the blog's 1-year anniversary in September, Unremarkable Files got a facelift and the world's ugliest birthday cake. The older kids started back to school and I learned that I was pregnant with Evans #6.

In October the toddler and the preschooler took full advantage of my pregnancy-induced exhaustion and made enormous messes all around the house. (If anyone needs to know how to get Turtle Wax out of EVERYTHING, just email me.) I fully intended to make Halloween costumes, but luckily Phillip's mom saved the day by doing it herself.

In November we lost a national treasure, and by that I mean my daughter's pet crayfish Flippy died. I'd actually begun to wonder if it was immortal, since it lived way longer than I'd hoped it would expected it to.

We may have dropped the ball at observing Advent and our gift-wrapping skills leave a little something to be desired, but all in all December was good to us. We saw the Nutcracker, baked a bunch of cookies, and startled our toddler by sneaking in a tree and decorating it while he slept.

Looking back at your year makes you realize that all the craziness is worth it, and that time your toddler figured out how to use the water dispenser on the fridge and flooded the kitchen is totally funny in retrospect. Happy New Year!

15 Best Posts of 2015

One of my favorite things to do at the end of December is sit down and look what I've posted over the past year. (I've always done a lot of laughing at my own jokes, which is part of the reason I started this blog  I figured if I'm going to be doing it anyway, others could join me.)

7 Quick Takes about Keeping My Wits, Wrapping Our Hearts Out, and Things That Would Give a Cleaning Lady Nightmares

It's 7 Quick Takes Friday!

1

Merry Christmas! I've spent my entire adult life trying to enjoy this season of celebrating Christ instead of getting overwhelmed by silly things like cards and cookie plates, and I'm beyond excited to say that I've finally done it.

I'm still kind of mystified as to how that happened, but I think the 5 things I did right this year were:

  1. Buying everything online. I only went to ONE brick-and-mortar store this season.
  2. Realizing that sending out Christmas cards and letters takes 5-10 times longer than I think it will, and giving myself enough time.
  3. Having the kids draw names instead of trying to coordinate dozens of sibling-to-sibling gifts. (It helps that the older kids are getting big enough to finish theirs mostly without my help.)
  4. Don't make 5 kinds of cookies in one day. Yes, I've previously done this because I'm a crazy person. When I made cookie plates for the neighbors this year I did one kind of cookies per day for a whole week, packaged them on Saturday, and delivered them on Sunday.
  5. Wrap ahead of time. Again, Phillip and I used to start wrapping everything at 10 PM on Christmas Eve. If that's not asking for a mental breakdown I don't know what is.
The end result of all this planning/doing ahead of time being: I actually enjoyed the holiday season. All of it. Maybe I can even make this a yearly thing.

2

Gift wrapping is always interesting around here. With five kids, plus both sides of our extended family buying gifts online and shipping them directly to us, that is a significant amount of wrapping.

We tackled these on Sunday night:

And these on Wednesday night:

To turn them into this:

But to be honest, the perfectionist in me got way too much satisfaction from getting all 17 boxes to nest perfectly inside each other after we were finished:

All is right with the world.

If you get excited looking at this picture, I highly suggest you also visit these images of things fitting perfectly into other things on BuzzFeed. If you don't, realize that I probably have a mental disorder and just move on to the next take.

Now, I don't want to make anyone jealous, but in addition to celebrating Christmas I spent a wild Saturday night finally cleaning our washing machine.

It irritates me that I have to periodically clean the machine I pay to clean our clothes, but that's another story for another time.

And you guys, it was dirty. I looked up a tutorial on "how to clean your washing machine" because it had been so long I'd forgotten how. The writer of the tutorial was all, "Tee-hee, I can't believe I'm showing pictures of the inside of my dirty washing machine!" which looked perfectly fine to me.

I'm sure she would have been scandalized by ours, which was so stinking filthy putting our clothes inside was probably making them more soiled rather than less.

Anyway, I cleaned it and now it's done for another... well, let's not talk about how long it's going to be until next time.

I'm currently nursing the head cold from Hades. On Wednesday morning I lay awake in bed at 3:30 AM wondering if I should do a Google search to see if anyone's sinuses have actually exploded before.

I haven't breathed through my nostrils in 3 days. Also we ran out of Kleenex.

Of course since I'm pregnant I can only take Tylenol, which is basically the equivalent of having a fairy blow dandelion fuzz on me in hopes that it'll make me feel better.

5

My daughter told me that a group of kids at school was talking about how many siblings they had, and they got pretty quiet when she said she had four, plus I was expecting a baby in the spring.

Then she said to me, "Mom? There are a lot of Evanses in the world... and most of them are in our family."

6

A friend of mine is getting a doula for her birth coming up in January, and I'm really curious about it.

I mentioned it to Phillip, who asked what in the world a doula does. I thought about how to answer him and said," Basically your job but she knows what she's doing."

He immediately said, "Yes. Let's get one of those." (He may or may not have almost passed out in the delivery room when #2 was being born.)

We'll see. Any doula experiences out there you'd like to share?

7

I also watched It's A Wonderful Life for the first time. I swore I'd seen it before as a kid, but I must have only seen the happy 10 minutes at the end because I didn't remember any of the hour and a half that came before it — and man, it was depressing! Also not for our kids because they had no clue what was going on the entire time. We kept having to pause the movie to explain.

So... not the most successful Christmas movie we've ever watched together. Our viewing of Elf last weekend went better. What's your favorite Christmas movie?

What I Learned From Failing at Advent

What I Learned from Failing at Advent -- I should've known that our first-ever effort at doing a daily Advent devotional would fail miserably. I learned something, anyway.  {posted @ Unremarkable Files}

The ubiquitous Advent calendar has never really been a thing in our family. We've got plenty of traditions we like to do during the month leading up to Christmas, but never a structured every-single-day-of-December undertaking.

As a perfectionist just barely passing in good society as "normal," I think I always knew deep down I just couldn't handle that kind of commitment.

Because for someone like me, embarking on a daily obligation for an entire month at the busiest time of the whole year would almost certainly end in a flaming disaster of Hindenburg-like proportions.

If you're not a perfectionist or you don't know one closely, this is what we're like:
  1. We're fine with passing on opportunities if we know we can't do them well; in fact, we prefer it. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
  2. And by "right," I mean perfectly.
  3. Massive amounts of stress happen when we've committed (even if only in our minds) to doing something and it doesn't go well.
  4. And by "well," I mean perfectly.

I wasn't ignorant of these 4 facts when I was given a free copy of the Names of Christ Advent Devotional, but I jumped at the chance to use it anyway because I'm always looking for ways to get my kids engaged in learning about Jesus (especially at Christmas.) And my favorite price is free.

Needless to say, we haven't been terribly consistent. I seemed to have forgotten when we started this on December 1st that we also have a life, with soccer practices and school activities and social events and playdates and nights when everyone in the family isn't even home at the same time. Frequently.

It's not very surprising then, that we are woefully behind.

In fact, if you used our progress on the devotional to guess which day it is, today would be the 15th. Which is bad because it's actually the 23rd.

Normally, this would send me into a perfectionist-induced breakdown whereupon I conclude my entire life is a shambles. End scene.

But by some Christmas miracle, it hasn't.

I've watched my kids decorating the themed ornaments that come with the Advent devotional and noticed something. They're enjoying themselves. They're learning. We may not be the most on-top-of-it family in the whole world, but we're a real family and we're doing our best.

The fact that we're doing it at all is more important than the fact that we're doing it imperfectly.

Anyway, who says you can't be learning about Jesus and coloring Christmas ornaments on December 31st? Because we will be.

Merry Christmas, even if you haven't done everything like you wanted to this month. Peace on earth, and especially in your home and in your mind  even if you're a perfectionist like me.
