After years of not wanting to do it, I finally rounded up all the stray socks and underwear that have fallen behind the washer/dryer. (I still didn't want to do it, for the record.)
The rescue effort was quite the operation requiring some pretty specialized equipment. Phillip was also drafted into the process because he has longer arms.
He declined to be photographed wearing his headlamp.

My last pregnancy was a rough, sort of complicated one, but it seems so long ago, almost like it was in another life. I don't think about it much and I thought my kids (especially the younger ones) had mostly forgotten it, too.
Then I walked in on my 4-year-old bringing plastic toy food to her 1-year-old brother who was wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. She saw me and explained, "We're playing 'bed rest.'"

Remember the convoluted plan we have to finish the basement (eventually)? We finished the stairs to the garage loft so we can store all our crap up there, and now it's on to Phase 2: cleaning out the basement.
This week I pared down the scrap fabric I'm hoarding to one box (which is probably more than enough for someone who rarely sews and doesn't like it when she does) and got rid of random junk I'd been keeping just in case (but haven't used in the 6 years we've lived here, so out you go.)
We gave away the movie collection that was literally scattered all over the basement floor not being watched ever, and got rid of our high school CD collections. I don't know what I'm going to do if I'm struck by the urge to listen to No Doubt from 1995 now, but I guess I'll survive somehow.
Mystery: we also found a Celine Dion CD down there that both Phillip and I vehemently deny ever purchasing.

Thinking I could use some insights to help my son in school, I picked up a book from the library called That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week, written by an academic counselor who noticed that most of her clients were boys who struggled with organization.
Long story short... I lost the book. I guess it's time to consider that he may be suffering from more of a genetic problem than a gender problem.

Registration opened up for this 18-mile trail run through the mountains that Phillip wants to do. Even though he almost died last time, which is generally the body's way of saying "Nope," he wants to give it another shot.
The children waiting at the finish line in 2014, wondering whether or not they were now orphans. |
The problem: the race is 4 days after the baby's due date. With past pregnancies I've gone into labor as early as 7 days before my due date and as late as 5 days after. So we registered, but with no idea if he'll actually get to run it. Anyone want to place a bet?

After keeping his speech under wraps for the longest time, our toddler turned a corner and is now doing so well that we met with his speech/communications specialist from Early Intervention for the last time this week!
New words are appearing almost every day, my older kids' favorite being "butt" which he yells at the top of his lungs whenever he sees a school bus.

In silly packaging news, I ordered this charcoal pencil for my daughter's art class, which arrived in this box. Cushioned by a mile of air pillows.
Why yes, that is a single pencil. |

Have you ever heard of the book 'the magic of tidying up' or something like that? There is a whole movement on it, and multiple YouTube videos on how to fold a shirt, etc.
Well, when I was pregnant with my most recent baby (born in September) I ordered this book. I did not get to finish it while pregnant because it kept getting misplaced! *facepalm* In my defense, I was on modified bedrest and the kids would randomly pick it up while 'tidying' and stuff it into a book shelf. I found a lot of random things shoved in the book shelf after the baby was born. Lol At one point in time I was actually questioning whether or not I had actually bought the book at all!
Totally random... But.. Where did you get that blue shirt?!?! Love it!
Haha that packaging is so funny. It shouldn't be because it's such a waste... but hey we could all do with a laugh :)
My predictiin on #5: If your husband is ready and excited and run it by the baby's due date, baby will be on time or early. If he's not ready and wants an excuse to get out of it, baby will be late.
*prediction*
excited *to* run...I should learn how to proofread *before* I hit "publish"
Oh my goodness, looks like the laundry fairy has been super busy at your house, leaving her presents! lol
Yaya for baby's butt! um.... I mean....
Woah, that is a lot of packaging for a pencil. Also your blog is hilarious and I have forthwith subscribed.
Amazon packaging NEVER ceases to amaze me. I wonder if they try to be ridiculous on purpose sometimes. My prediction is a finally "on time" baby... My husband doesn't pose for me either.
I keep a piggy bank by the washing machine which a few years ago fell behind it and I retrieved the bank but the money still sits there. I told my family, anyone who collects the change can have it, so far, no takers.
I reserved it at the library after hearing all the hype. I would love to simplify my life that way, but I don't think I'm diligent enough to pull off the way she wants everything folded a certain way in drawers. I'm lucky to just get clothes in the dryer before they start to mildew...
Any maternity clothes I own have gone through 5 babies already and are basically unfashionable, tattered rags. So that blue one is a loaner from my wonderful friend Katy who's getting an entire post dedicated to her next week because of it. I'll post the URL here when it goes up.
Here's hoping that you're right! If baby hasn't come by race day he's going to have to stay home, since he'll be inaccessible in the mountains for like 4 hours and if I happen to go into labor while he's gone he won't be there for the birth!
That's great! Hope I don't disappoint you. And if I do, I'll blame it on being tired because the kids keep waking me up at night.
I try to keep embarrassing photos to a minimum. On the blog, anyway.
It's harder than it looks to get behind a washing machine! Maybe someday one of your kids will get desperate for spending money, you never know.
Pile it on, sister. There's been no shortage of butt jokes around here the last few weeks.

Regarding the 18 miles, two weeks after my first baby, I sent my husband off deer hunting with my Dad and brother. He had never hunted before, never shot a gun before. WHAT WAS I THINKING!?!? But he came back safely with a 4 point buck! It was getting late in the day, no deer for anyone. As he was walking done a hill through a wash, he startled the buck, who had been hiding there all day, and shot the deer in self-defense as it ran up the wash!
My earliest memory is of my Mom teaching me how to fluff a pillow, just before I turned 3. She was sent to bed carrying my sister, and Mom was trying to keep me and my older brother entertained.
Happy times for your family, Happy Baby!
If you've ever read Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, their theory is that if you leave a CD / Cassette in the car for long enough, it will turn into Queen. Whatever it was to start with. Maybe the same applies to basements. If you leave CDs in basements for long enough, one of them will turn into Celine Dion. Just because!
That makes as much sense as any theory I had about how Celine Dion music got down there - thanks!
You're 100% my new favorite blogger, based on this post title alone.
Half the time I write something and don't know if it will make me sound funny or psychotic, so I'm glad it was the former. This time, anyway.
