7 Quick Takes about a Pie a Day Keeping the Doctor Away, Zaz, and Why It's Totally Possible to Have a Small-Budget Christmas

It's 7 Quick Takes Friday!

1

What a great Thanksgiving weekend. I could really get used to having Phillip home from work all the time, having no obligations outside the house, and eating leftovers for every meal for an entire weekend. Seriously, I forgot how to cook by the time Monday came around.

There was a stomach queasiness thing going around which dampened my buzz just a little, but it was still an awesome weekend.

Hiking on Friday.
On a related note, you don't know what cute is until you've seen a 1-year-old trying to use a walking stick.

Probably the best part of the weekend, which deserves an entire take to itself, was the pie. Four days of it.

I realized, though, as I looked through my photo library that I don't have a single picture. Occasionally I think I should become a food blogger, and then I realize that when I have yummy food in front of me I usually just devour it like Cookie Monster before even thinking about taking a picture or two first.

So close your eyes with me and try to imagine: instead of making all the pies at once and being too full to really enjoy any of them, we ate a new homemade pie every day. Apple on Thursday, pumpkin on Friday, pecan on Saturday, and chocolate creme on Sunday. So delicious.

What's your favorite kind of pie?

Another thing I did over the long weekend was tackle the pile of clothes that needed mending, hemming, or other kinds of sewing. I've been putting it off for a while, one of the reasons being that I don't like sewing. The time I spend behind my sewing machine is directly proportionate to my level of crabbiness.

Which is probably why Phillip refers to it as The Wench Machine.

My kids did a great job helping clean up the house the other day, but it wasn't until later that I noticed this:

Um... is there a psychologist in the house?

When I asked about it, my daughter explained that she was just trying to make the baby stand up, not inventing new methods of extracting secrets from POWs.

My 6th grader has been coming home talking about a French singer named Zaz and you know what? I like her. Apparently 6th grade is when kids become cooler than their parents, FYI.

I don't speak a word of French so she could be singing about picking her scabs, but it still sounds great to me. Maybe I should check out more foreign music.

As always, I'm trying to finish my Christmas shopping early so I don't buckle under the stress and go crazy, and I'm really thinking that this might be the year! I know I say that every year. But I've really gotten most of our shopping done. The proof:

Our closet is beginning to look like a warehouse for Amazon.com.

As I write this, my preschooler and toddler are running around the house (going on 7 minutes now) each holding one end of the same string and giggling maniacally.

Remind me to file that image away in my head, just in case I'm tempted to buy either one of them expensive toys for Christmas.

I always wonder what's the content in those maniacal toddler-giggles. I love your hiking photo!

My three year old just very much enjoyed that Cookie Monster clip! My you really do love your pies! I have to say they all sound amazing mind you. I've actually bought things in shops so my pile of unwrapped presents is a lot less tidy than yours. Having said that we don't have any dolls being tortured. :-)

A string! Yep that sounds about right! I too have an Amazon closet. Is there any other way to do Christmas? I have not been to a mall in years!

Our toddler has developed some serious evil laughter lately. Makes me wonder about him...

How did we do this before Amazon? I think I'll have it all done without setting foot in a store this year and I love it!

Oh my goodness, the baby tied up for torture is hilarious. Children are so creative, if that's the right word there :)

It's certainly the most generous one!

Jenny, the Wench machine- bwahahaha!!!
Pies!! My tummy hurts remembering all ours. Mama made 8 homemade ones for only 8 yess!! We had a whole pie each!! I felt it was my duty to make sure I finished mine so she felt appreciated for all her hard work. It was a hard job, but someone had to do it. I sacrificed myself for the family good. I'm the good daughter.

8 homemade pies! Part of the reason Phillip decided to do a pie a day was so he wasn't shackled to the stove all morning making them... I can't imagine 8!
