Happy Mother's Day from Your 10-Month-Old

Dear Mom,

I hear it's Mother's Day, when I'm supposed to tell you all the things I love about you, so I took it upon myself to draw up a little list while you thought I was busy stuffing Play-doh in the living room outlets yesterday.

(I did that too, but only after I made this list.)

First, I'd like to tell you that I really enjoy our late-night chats. You seem to be progressively less enthusiastic about them as the night wears on, which I'm still trying to figure out, but I so look forward to seeing you several times every night.

I just can't bear to be separated from you for long, which you've probably noticed from the way I crawl to the bathroom door and throw myself at it screaming whenever you try to slip in there alone.

One of my favorite things about you is the distinctive way you smell. When a hint of sour milk wafts through the air, I know you're near.

(By the way, you know that coconut butter body scrub stuff you use in the shower? It makes you smell weird, which is why I usually make the effort to spit up down your bra and restore your natural Mommy scent. No need to thank me, I do it because I love you.)

Thanks for searching the house high and low when I lose my pacifier with the stuffed puppy on the end. But I think we make a good team, you and I, because it seems like the louder I cry the faster you look for it.

Thank you for doing your best to figure out what I need, since I only know two words and they're only helpful in limited contexts. I appreciate your effort, even though most of the time I end up wailing face-down on the floor until you offer me Cheerios. (For the record, I'm not usually asking for Cheerios, I just really like them.)

While I have your attention, I'd like to apologize for that time I removed my diaper and smeared the contents all over the coffee table. Clearly that was unacceptable, since you made me wear a sleeper backwards with a safety pin through the zipper tab for three weeks afterward. I didn't know that kind of thing was frowned upon.

Likewise about that tub of Vaseline I found in the bathroom.

Last of all, I just want you to know that I notice and appreciate all the little things. Specifically, the little things in the carpet. Tiny hair elastics, dust balls, and pennies are some of my favorites, and I like when we play that game to see if I can swallow one before you get there.

And remember how then I bite your fingers when you're trying to get it out? That game is the best! You're the funnest mom ever.

Oh, and thanks again for all the Cheerios. They really are my favorite.

Happy Mother's Day,
Your 10-Month Old
