They are pretty entertaining pets if you know how to care for them although I think you'd be too scared to ever figure that out. Also $60 to feed a pet a year isn't that much. The reason Kermit didn't move is because they are nocturnal. She happened to have Furball home on the same weekend as her birthday so she liked taking pictures of him/her participating in the party and playing with her presents.
