7 Quick Takes about Fashion According to Men, Something about Horses, and 12-Month-Old Computer Programmers

It's 7 Quick Takes Friday! How was your week?

I wore this new-to-me dress for the first time on Sunday (Savers! $7!) and Phillip's comment was "Don't you have the same dress in red?"

"Well... I have a red dress that's about the same length, yeah." I told him.

"From the male perspective," he answered, "you have the same dress in red."

Fair enough. I think every football game is exactly the same, so I suppose I understand where he's coming from.

At the dinner table, I happened to tell my 12-year-old that she was "smarter than the average bear." Not to be outdone, the 5-year-old said, "I'm as smart as the average horse!"

Which made everybody laugh, and it also made me think of a funny horse story from when her brother was in preschool.

On the way home one day, he was in the backseat flipping through a book of 'D' words they'd given him, narrating each page to me: "Here's a drum, and here's a dog..."

Reaching the page with a picture of a donkey, he hesitated for a minute and said, "I'm not sure why there's a horse on here. I guess it's a 'dorse.'" And with that being settled, he flipped on to the next page.

Yep, our whole family is working on our Mensa applications right now.

The older I get, the more I find myself having déjà vu. But when my son watched a YouTube video of somebody setting a world record for eating 255 Peeps in 5 minutes at the World Peeps Eating Championship in April, I swear I recognized the guy.

After trying to figure it out for a few days, I looked him up and figured out why: I saw him win a hot dog eating contest on TV a few years ago. (Probably why I don't watch TV anymore; it was disgusting.)

It turns out that this guy, Matt Stonie, is a full-time competitive eater and tours the Major League Eating contest circuit. I had no idea either of those were real things.

Also, Wikipedia says Matt studied nutrition in college so things really couldn't be more perfect.

We've been having a tough time with bedtime, or as we like to call it in the Evans household, Whack-a-Mole.

Just when you think you've got one kid in bed, two or three more pop up and have to go potty or show you the bump on their tongue or give you a book summary that takes longer to listen to than actually reading the book itself.

We've been trying to curtail the chit-chat and field trips to the bathroom after lights out, so when I went to give my 5-year-old a goodnight hug and she launched into a story, I stopped her and asked, "Are the lights on or off?"

"Off."

"So that means no more getting out of bed and no more talking."

"Okay." There was a half-second pause before she made two fists and said, "Mom, this is how a T-rex"

I cut her off and had to leave the room before I started laughing, but now I'm kind of curious what in the world she was going to say.

Our baby is really developing an aptitude for computers. The keyboard is right at eye level and he's taking full advantage.

I know because the other day he raced in while I was distracted and opened up an incognito window to do a quick search for "kmart.com00  bmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmrjn."

Privacy is important to 1-year-olds.

This week I potty-trained the 3-year-old, with the help of the world's most haggard baby doll.

"I've seen some things..."

We use a one-day potty training method involving teaching a doll, and this old gal has been at this gig for 12 years in our house.

Let's just say she's been around the block.

I almost felt kind of bad pulling her back out of the attic to do it again, sort of like the cruel-hearted master in Black Beauty who works an old horse to the point of collapse rather than just gently putting it out to pasture.

As I was pulling into the driveway, I noticed something green just barely visible behind the rearview mirror. I'm all, "What's this? I've never seen it before" and pulled it out.

It was a parking pass from our summer vacation to Washington, D.C.

In 2015.

Apparently, I've been driving around with this thing on display in the windshield for almost 2 years.

Sometimes I'm so on top of things it hurts.

It's a lovely dress in any color. I'd be interested in hearing more about your potty training method at some point. And. . . now I'm going to be wondering about what your five year old was going to say.

Oh my gosh! You husband's comment is hysterical and totally something my husband would say! Love it!

I don't often share useful information on the blog, but I think I just might write a post on it because I feel like potty training is actually one of the things I know how to do pretty well!

Hahaha! That comment about the dress (and football) cracks me up. It's so true! The story about your son and the "dorse" is also pretty great :) And I'd love to hear more about your potty training method!

#7 cracked me up. Hey, it's amazing how time can fly when it comes to random things lying around. On the topic of #1, I got three inches cut off my hair today, and choppy layers and Angel says, "I literally cannot see anything different about your hair." Maybe if I changed color from purple to green he'd notice...maybe.

Jenny Evans said...

That's funny. I just got a haircut yesterday, came home and told Phillip I hated it, disappeared into the bathroom for an hour and gave myself almost an entirely new one, and Phillip said he liked it but I could tell he really didn't see much difference.

LOL That doll!!!
I like the dress, so I say having it in more colors is quite acceptable.
